1958 Hires Root Beer Cubs Checklist

Who would ever collect these weird, mostly unknown cubs memorabilia? Well, I do, and if you do, then you're a hard-core Cubs collector.

The 1958 Hires Root Beer soda package came with a removable coupon and is an uncommon Cubs collectible. You can join the club by mailing in a coupon with two bottle caps and a dime to the address on the back. I always assumed Haddonfield was a made-up Illinois town that appeared in the Halloween movie, but Hires Root Beer is actually located there. You're now an official Hires Root Beer Club member, and you received a mail-away club card, a Hires Premium How to Play Baseball book

There was a test set in 1958, which is also very collectible.

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.

Number of Cards

The 1958 Hires Root Beer set included 66 cards, one of which featured a Cubs player.

Size of Cards

The size of the cards are approximately 2-5/16" by 3-1/2", or 2-5/16" by 7" with tabs

Basic Features

The cards were distributed with detachable coupons that were placed inside cartons of Hires Root Beer. The "Join the Hires Baseball Club Today" perforated tabs were often torn off. It is very hard to get a card with the advertisement tab intact, making them quite pricey. Each item features a colored player representation encircled by a faux wood grain pattern that provides the impression that the viewer is seeing through a knot hole. The bottom edge displays his name, team, and position.

The player's bio, the card number, a sentence describing their career, and a bottle of Hires Root Beer were all displayed on the card's reverse.

Cubs players you might not be familiar with Claude Hendrix

Claude Hendrix

was born on April 13, 1889 in Olathe, Kansas

On April 23, 1914, the first pitcher to win a game at what was then known as Weeghman Park, the current home of the Chicago Cubs and the only remaining Federal League stadium, He began playing for the Chicago Whales, and after the Federal League folded, Hendrix signed a contract with the Chicago Cubs. Hendrix led the Cubs to the National League pennant in 1918 with a 20-7 record. In his lone game in the series, Hendrix singled off Ruth, and as a pitcher, he got all three Boston batters to fly out in the bottom of the eighth in the sixth game against the Boston Red Sox.

The most recognizable set Claude Hendrix was featured in

1919-21 W514 Baseball Strip Cards

Number of Cards

W514 consisted of 120 cards and included 12 Cubs players.

Size of Cards

measure 1-3/8" by 2-1/2".

Basic Features

The earliest and most widely-collected of the "strip cards" for their era, these cards feature color drawings of the players and display the card number in the lower corner. The bottom border features the player's name, position, and team, while the backs are blank. The set also includes seven of the eight Chicago Black Sox. Originally issued in strips of 10 cards each, be aware that there are a lot of fake cards in this set.

To prevent purchasing a false piece of history, always get a professionally graded card from a recognized provider. In the future, graded cards will be significantly more valuable.
