1876 White Stockings National League’s first pennant

The Chicago team finished the season with a 52-14 record.  They clinched the National League’s first pennant with a 7-6 victory over the Hartford Dark Blues on September 26, 1876.

  • 1B     Cal McVey
  • 2B     Ross Barnes
  • 3B     Cap Anson
  • SS     John Peters
  • OF     Paul Hines
  • OF     John Glenn
  • OF     Bob Addy
  • P       Albert Spalding

Hard to believe Spalding pitched 61 of the 66 games played. This 1876 poster of the White Stockings players names and faces are quite rare. Unfortunately, there are no cards from this time period.

Not much is known about the park they played in but 23rd Street Grounds were built after the great Chicago fire.  No known photographs or sketches of the park in detail even exist. All that is known is that it was a wooden park with a traditional diamond on the playing field. The top poster of the team has a drawing of a ball field and could be the first base side or the 23rd Street Grounds.
