1953 Red Man Chicago Cubs

Who would ever collect these weird, mostly unknown cubs memorabilia? Well, I do, and if you do, then you're a hard-core Cubs collector.

Number of Cards

1953 Red Man has 52 cards which there are 2 Cubs players

Size of Cards

The size of the cards measure approximately 3 1/2" by 4" (or 3 1/2" by 3 5/8" without the tab)

Basic Features

The 1952-1955 Red Man tobacco cards have been called by many to be the best sets since the beginning of the 20th century. The second Red Man set was similar to the first, except that the card number was in the bio box. The fronts are colored artist renditions of the players. In a box was the information, including name and bio, with a short blurb. The bottom has a tab that can be cut out for a baseball cap. The backs say "New for '53" and have advertisements for Redman. Unfortunately, this is the only year the Cubs had cards.

1977 Holiday Inn MSA Disc Set, which consisted of 70 disks and included two Cubs players

Size of Cards

The discs are approximately 3 3/8" in diameter.

Basic Features

The disc version of the ballplayer, which was created by Michael Scheter Associates (MSA) in 1977, was sold by a variety of advertisers, including Holiday Inn. The discs have a diameter of around 3 3/8". These discs are not numbered, thus we have arranged them alphabetically.

In 1977, the Holiday Inn hotel network in the Midwest offered a disc set for free when a child's dinner was purchased at one of the participating restaurants. You won't find any team logos on these disks, either, as they were only sanctioned by the Major League Players Association through Mike Schechter Associates.

The red-backed cards are the most difficult of the three.

A diamond-shaped box with the player's name appears below the player, and his team name is given at the bottom. A biography, statistics, and the Red Heart insignia are printed on the back.

Ernie Bank Strange and Unusual autographs

Who would ever collect these weird, mostly unknown cubs memorabilia? Well, I do, and if you do, then you're a hard-core Cubs collector.

The all-time favorite Cubs player must be Ernie Bank. When autograph and relic cards were originally released, there were a number of strange sets available, and Banks was a part of most of them.

His first Auto card was 1992 Front Row you can read about it here

Despite having a 1969 set named Nabisco Team Flakes that included the late great hall of famer Ron Santo, Nabisco entered the baseball card business in 1992. An autographed color action shot of Ernie Banks was featured. If you mail in two proofs of purchase from specially marked Nabisco packets and $5, you'll get this card if it survived the mail.

This oddball was issued by Canadian Club Whiskey in 1996

a few years later 1999 Hillshire Farms Home Run Heroes. Banks' standard-size card, which are available through a Hillshire Meats wrapper redemption offer, feature his autographs and a certificate of authenticity.

All the strange and unusual autograph cards are fairly easy to collect and somewhat cheap. Remember to always get a professional grader from a reputable company so you don't get a fake piece of history. The value of graded cards is much better down the road.

2017 Topps Heritage has 725 cards which there are 42 Cubs players with many SP and Varations

Size of Cards

The size of the cards are standard-size 2 ½ x 3 ½

Basic Features

This year's heritage collection draws inspiration from the iconic 1968 Topps Baseball cards, showcasing a unique design characterized by rounded corners and a bold black and white border that highlights the player's image. The player's name is prominently featured at the bottom, while a colored circle in the lower right corner denotes their position and team. The card backs embrace a traditional style, presenting a vertical layout rich in color and detailed season-by-season statistics. What truly captivates me this year is the trivia at the bottom, offering a wealth of fascinating facts. There was a change to the base set's composition, the number of short-printed base cards in the Heritage Series has been increased from 75 to 100.
