Cubs players you might not be familiar with Dom Dallessandro

Nicholas Dominic “Dom” Dallessandro

was born on October 3, 1913 in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Dom Dallessandro, an outfielder, spent the majority of his eight seasons in the major leagues playing with the Chicago Cubs. He hit.304 with a.400 on-base percentage in 1944, which was his greatest year. Let's face the harsh reality of the Cubs, who could have had DiMaggio but got this outfielder in place of him. Pants Rowland, a retired White Sox manager who had been scouting DiMaggio, He told the Cubs, "You can get a better ballplayer for half the money."

I've always questioned whether Pants was bought off to offer the Cubs owner false information so that he would choose poorly not to sign Joe DiMaggio. That's simply my viewpoint; everyone else who dealt with DiMaggio claimed that this young man was the best they had ever seen. Let's now discuss Dallessandro's "claim to fame" happenings.

  • It's incredible that Ted Williams was once traded for him.
  • Being only 5 feet 6 inches tall, he is somewhat short.
  • Last Cubs’ player to be discharged from military service, WW2
  • Throughout his career, he always got a lot of power hits, including doubles and triples. Not an easy out, he also finished his career with twice as many walks (310) as strikeouts (150).

The most recognizable set Dom was featured in

1941 Double Play (R330)

Number of Cards

It consisted of 70 cards and included 10 Cubs players.

2008 Topps Allen and Ginter Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

2008 Topps Allen & Ginter has 351 cards which there are 8 Cubs players with 2 SP

Size of Cards

Cards are standard-size 2 ½ x 3 ½

Basic Features

Topps Allen and Ginter, which debuted in 2006, quickly became one of the company's most popular offerings. Current and retired baseball players, historical luminaries, current celebrities, and the occasional monument were all depicted on the cards. Each set included 300 base cards, 50 short prints, an autograph, and a set of game-used inserts.

For several years, Topps has been framing mini cards with autographs or gamed minis inside in their retro-tobacco themed sets. This concept was carried over into Topps Allen and Ginter, which included both an autograph and a game-used collection. Also inserted into packs were original A and G that were framed similar to the relic and autographed cards. Allen and Ginter are also known for their box topper insert sets of slightly oversized cards, as well as low serial number autographs and game-used cards.

In 2008, Topps marked the third anniversary of the popular Allen and Ginter series. Cards 301-351 were published as short prints and are part of the base set.

A base card of Kosuke Fukudome (the "flavor-of-the-month" rookie of 2008) was added to the base set late in the production run. The card is not sequentially-numbered and is short-printed; but produced in roughly the same quantities as the 50 other base cards (cards #301-#350) that are short prints. The "NNO" Fukudome is only available as a base card and NOT in any of the parallels.

2008 marked the first year of the DNA Relics inserts that would become a staple in Topps Allen and Ginter. It was also the first year when insert cards based on fictional people or things were included in the set.
