1953 Red Man Chicago Cubs

Who would ever collect these weird, mostly unknown cubs memorabilia? Well, I do, and if you do, then you're a hard-core Cubs collector.

Number of Cards

1953 Red Man has 52 cards which there are 2 Cubs players

Size of Cards

The size of the cards measure approximately 3 1/2" by 4" (or 3 1/2" by 3 5/8" without the tab)

Basic Features

The 1952-1955 Red Man tobacco cards have been called by many to be the best sets since the beginning of the 20th century. The second Red Man set was similar to the first, except that the card number was in the bio box. The fronts are colored artist renditions of the players. In a box was the information, including name and bio, with a short blurb. The bottom has a tab that can be cut out for a baseball cap. The backs say "New for '53" and have advertisements for Redman. Unfortunately, this is the only year the Cubs had cards.

1938 Clopay Foto-Fun (R329) Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1938 Clopay Foto-Funset had between 95-100+ cards, with 6 Cubs players

Size of Cards

The size of the cards are 2 3/16" x 2 3/4"

Basic Features

The cards were given out in a cardboard box containing a sheet of photographic paper and a picture negative. This package includes an image that develops on its own. The photo would appear (with a blueish hue) when put in direct sunlight. Apart from the negative enclosed in every pack, the company also offered collectors with an imitation wood-grain cardboard frame. The back of the frame was printed with the directions. This is, in my opinion, one of the strangest sets available. Keep in mind to make sure that the item you buy is not a counterfit.

1998 Flair Cubs Checklist

Number of Cards

1998 Flair had 120 cards, with 3 Cubs players and lots of varations

Size of Cards

The size of the cards are standard-size 2 ½ x 3 ½

Basic Features

The 1998 set may be confusing due to the different rows and subsets, referred to as 'variations' by Fleer. Each "Row" was then sub-divided into four, 30-card sub-sections featuring a different cardback design and banner. All base cards are labeled "Section 2" on the back

The first Flair Baseball set was released in 1993. Originally titled 'Fleer Limited', '93 Flair was Fleer's initial attempt at creating 'super-premium' cards to compete with Topps' Finest. That base set was printed on 24-point cardstock, the thickest ever used on a trading card, with glossy UV coating on both sides.

All 480 base cards, which include 120 players from all four 'Rows', are available in both Legacy and Masterpiece parallels. These parallels are labeled as 'Section 1' (Legacy) or 'Section 0' (Masterpiece) on the reverse.
